As the victim walked past he tried to touch her inappropriately but she pushed his hand away and told him to leave them alone. The suspect then ran off down Westerleigh Road, officers said.

The suspect is described as a white man with a pale complexion, 5ft 6in to 5ft 7in tall of average build, aged between 40 and 55 years old. He was wearing a black zip-up hooded top and dark trousers.

Detective Constable Nicholas Riley said: "This was a frightening incident for the victim who was fortunately able to act quickly to avoid being assaulted more seriously.

"This incident is being investigated and I would like to reassure people that we will do all we can to find the person responsible and there is no need for undue alarm.

"We have already conducted some house-to-house enquiries in the area but we would still like to speak to any other local residents, or people walking or driving through the area at that time, to contact us if they saw someone acting suspiciously in the area."

Anyone with information should call DC Riley on 101, or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
