BRIDGWATER’S prospective parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrat party has slammed MP Ian Liddell-Grainger’s remarks about the new wind farm near Puriton.

Theo Butt-Philip strongly disagrees with the Conservative MP’s claims that the area does not need any more renewable energy sources. Mr Liddell-Grainger previously said that the plans to build nine wind turbines were “stupid”.

Mr Liddell-Grainger said: “These plans are absolutely ridiculous – no good can come out of building nine eyesores in an area of natural beauty.

“These gigantic wastes of space will not bring any more energy to the area than Hinkley, they will be a distraction to drivers and you will be able to see them from Glastonbury Tor, Brean Down and the Mendips. The wind farm will not bring a job to the area. The site is prone to flooding, on a windy day the blades will chop birds coming off the sea to pieces and not a single good thing can come out of having these turbines. I am totally against them being built.”

Mr Butt-Philip responded: “We need to build more renewable energy projects to reduce our carbon emissions. I believe reducing carbon emissions is essential to bringing climate change under control; I have yet to be convinced that Mr Liddell-Grainger shares this view.”
