Elated bus passengers in Wincanton have hailed a last-ditch deal to bring a popular service back from the brink.

South West Coaches announced in October 2012 that 13 of its services were to be axed by Christmas.

Among those to be scrapped was the popular 28 service from Templecombe to Salisbury, which passed through Wincanton and a number of surrounding villages.

However, after funding by Wiltshire Council, a deal has been struck to permanently safeguard part of the route.

From Saturday, Tourist Coaches will run the service between Wincanton and Salisbury.

Wincanton town councillor and bus passenger Dora Hibberd hailed the news – but remains sceptical whether it will last.

She said: "This is great news as long as it lasts. It has all been a bit uncertain over the last few months so we're all happy.

"It's a great achievement for all of us who have campaigned against the cuts from the very start. I am delighted with the news but remain suspicious over whether it will last."

The service will run from Wincanton to Salisbury twice a day every Tuesday and Saturday.

However, buses will no longer run through Templecombe, Horsington, South Cheriton and North Cheriton before leaving Wincanton.
