Wincanton braced for Christmas Extravaganza

Tonight marks the start of Christmas celebrations in Wincanton.

The Christmas Extravaganza will be held in the town from 5.30pm.

After the mayor's reception in the town hall, Christmas carols will be sung around the tree, in Market Square, by local parishioners and schoolchildren.

Chairman of Wincanton Sports Ground and former international sprinter and surfer, Stuart Matthews, will turn on the lights at 6.30pm.

He said: "I was surprised and honoured to be asked to turn on the lights – it will be a real privilege.

"The town has made a great effort to hold this event and the local community has really got behind it. I'm thoroughly looking forward to it."

Father Christmas will be in his grotto in the Baptist Hall, Mill Street, from 6.30pm, with dozens of stalls selling crafts and local food joining the Anonymous Travelling Market on the high street.

A number of authors, including Gerald Box, will be on hand to sign copies of books in Papertrees, bouncy castles will be available for youngsters, and fire crews will allow families to explore their fire engines.

Live music will be held on the high street and in The Dolphin Hotel garden.
