Drivers have to pay for their parking in Weston-super-Mare town centre following the introduction of a new regime this week.

A new on-street parking scheme launched in the resort following the installation of pay and display meters in 28 town centre streets.

North Somerset Council is introducing the scheme in response to concerns raised by traders, shoppers and disabled drivers over parking congestion and widespread disregard of the current parking restrictions in the town centre.

Currently the authority does not have the power to enforce the existing restrictions on the roads and historically this has been done by the police.

The council does have the power to enforce pay and display bays and so, when these are introduced, the time limits will be enforced.

As part of the scheme Palmer Street has become one-way running south towards Meadow Street to help prevent congestion and create additional parking spaces.

The council has reduced charges in the two short stay car parks that serve the town centre – Melrose and Grove – and a complementary scheme to electronically sign off-street car park space availability in the town centre is expected to become operational in the coming weeks.

North Somerset Council executive member for highways, Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, said: “All these measures are aimed at improving the availability of parking in the town centre, making Weston a more convenient place to visit. We are looking at encouraging longer term visitors to park off-street, leaving the on-street spaces available for those making short trips to the shops.”

Residents living in the scheme area can apply for parking permits allowing extended parking on-street from 5pm-10am.

More details about the scheme can be found on the council website www.n-somerset.gov.uk/onstreetparking.

“Ah yes I remember around 1960 TEMPORARY street parking meters being introduced to pay for off-street parking provision, now we pay for BOTH”
