Weston-super-Mare Carnival 2012: All you need to know
Weston-super-Mare Carnival organisers are hoping for a bumper crowd tonight as the parade is held on a Friday for the first time in its 40-year history.
The spectacular procession, which has traditionally always taken place on a Monday, will light up the resort's streets this evening.
Last year's carnival raised £12,000, and it is hoped tonight's parade will raise even more for local causes following its switch to Friday.
Weston Carnival chairman Brian Coombs said: "(We) considered that a Friday could make the evening more enjoyable for viewers without the need to consider school attendance the next morning, and possibly enjoying a weekend in Weston.
"Friday would also allow more volunteers to be available without the 'next morning' return to work.
"Tonight is the result of many months of hard work and dedication from both the carnival committee and clubs."
Town centre roads will close from 6pm tonight, and the procession will start at 7.15pm.
Police will be patrolling the streets, and have vowed not to let any anti-social behaviour ruin it for the thousands watching the parade.
Chief Inspector Jeff Foreman, head of operations for the North Somerset policing district, said: "The Weston carnival has become a hugely popular, well-run event which attracts thousands of visitors to the town.
"Our message is simple – come and join the party, but don't risk spoiling the night for everyone else through irresponsible drinking and doing something you will no doubt regret tomorrow."
Next year's Weston Carnival date has already been announced. It will keep its Friday date, and will take place on November 8, 2013.
