Fire at Weston flats
Residents at a block of flats in Weston-super-Mare had to be evacuated after a tea light candle started a fire.
Avon Fire and Rescue were called to Cairo Court in Manilla Crescent at 6pm on Thursday to reports of a fire in a ground floor flat.
Three fire engines and a turntable ladder from Weston and one further fire engine from Winscombe attended the scene.
A man in his 40s, who was inside the flat at the time of the fire, suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
The block contained around 16 flats and a number of residents had to be evacuated for their own safety while others had already fled.
Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using two high-pressure hose reels and a positive ventilation fan cleared the smoke.
The fire started in the bedroom of the flat and is thought to have been started accidentally after a candle or tea light was lit on magazines.
Avon Fire and Rescue cautioned people to always use the correct tea-light holders and to make sure they are fully extinguished after use.
