Weston boss looks for inside info on FA opponents Worcester City

Weston-super-Mare boss Craig Laird will consult his number two for inside information on FA Cup opponents Worcester City.

Seagulls assistant manager Marc McGregor played for the Blue Square North outfit before switching to the Woodspring Stadium last season.

And the former Forest Green Rovers and Tamworth striker will be able to give Laird and his players a useful insight into City, who travel to Somerset in the third qualifying round on Saturday, October 6.

Laird said: “Macca was on Worcester’s books last year and he knows the manager and most of the players there.

Although Worcester are currently in the play-off positions in Blue Square North, Laird is relieved to have avoided top-flight opposition.

“We could have had a difficult away game against a top Conference side, but we are at home against opposition from the same level,” said Laird, whose team saw off Frome Town 2-0 in the last round at the weekend.

“Home advantage is important and this is a tie we will take all day long. It is one both sides will fancy they can win.”

Laird added: “It is a lot of money and a run in the FA Cup is always very important for clubs at our level.”

Fellow Blue Square South side Bath City have been drawn at home to Southern League Premier Division outfit Gosport Borough.

Gloucester City have a home tie against Blue Square Bet South side Eastleigh.

“I know it will be a tough ask against Eastleigh as I think they’re a full-time side and they’ve got some decent players,” said Gloucester boss Mehew.

“But we tend to raise our game against the sides who have a bit of a reputation and we’ll look forward to it.”

Eastleigh endured a poor start to the season in Blue Square Bet South, one that resulted in former Bristol City striker Iain Baird departing as manager.

His replacement, former Stevenage Borough boss Richard Hill has overseen victories in both of his games so far, including Saturday’s 2-1 second qualifying round success over Farnborough Town.

Hill can count on a number of players with Football League experience, including Northern Ireland international midfielder Mark Hughes and one-time Bristol City striker Lee Peacock.

Chippenham landed a home tie against Badshot Lea, who have won three of their four away games in the Combined Counties League Premier Division. They beat Leiston 4-2 in the last round.

Yate Town have been rewarded for their fine 2-1 victory over Oxford City with another tie at Lodge Road against fellow Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West team North Leigh.

A cheque worth £7,500 awaits the round winners, who will then be just one step away from a potential tie against Football League opposition.
