Wells unsung hero honoured by Somerset
THE very definition of unsung heroes is that they do their good deeds away from the limelight – but one such good-deed-doer has received the praise they deserve.
Denise Boulton, of Wells, received Somerset County Council’s Chairman’s Award for Service to the Community for all the time she spends helping others.
The county council chairman, Councillor David Fothergill, said: “I would like to thank Denise for her outstanding contribution to the people of Wells, young and old. She gives, without hesitation, her help and wide experience to all who ask or depend on her in the community.
“Denise gives her time and help to anyone who asks or needs help and she is an outstanding credit to a caring society, without people like Denise, the district would be a much poorer place.”
Denise gives her time to a huge number of projects including working with the blind as a sighted guide, working with families with abused children and single parent families, sitting on the Community Education Committee Wells, getting funding from Sports for England towards the building of a new sports centre as well as being a member of Wells Residents Association committee.
When she heard the news Denise said: “Over the years people have thanked me personally and it would not have been appropriate to publicise it.
“I think what touches me most is when years later they still remember me and what I was able to do for them.
“It makes it all worthwhile to know that adults and children alike have benefited.
“My thanks to David Paterson for nominating me.”
Across the county 50 people were nominated by their local county councillor or parish council for the award.
Mr Fothergill said: “It was a huge honour to personally thank all the award winners for their services to their community.
“Often, they are the kind of people who don’t enjoy the limelight, but I think it’s important they are publicly thanked for the significant role they play in improving the lives of others in their community.”
At a ceremony at Taunton Rugby Club, Mr Fothergill congratulated each nominee before awarding them a certificate and small commemorative gift.
