Wells B 8 Wells C 2
The B team were triumphant in this in-house battle to maintain their position at the top of the table.
The C team's first pair of Mike Lintern and Chris Shering got off to a strong start with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over B team captain Dave Cotton and James Edwards.
The Bs then took control, though, with father and son pairing Matthew and Nick Showering comfortably beating Marcus Fisher and Dan Cooke 6-1, 6-2 before going on to win 6-4, 6-3 in their second rubber.
Cotton and Edwards won their second rubber 6-1, 6-3 to secure the match.
Wells' D Team continued their winning streak with an impressive home victory over Backwell C.
Wells Ladies C 4 Wells Ladies B 8
The ladies also contested an all-Wells affair, with the league-leading B team on top.
Despite taking a 3-0 lead in the first match, the C team's Jeannie Fullman and Binkie Heather lost 4-6, 5-7 against Linda Lester and Judy Scott. The second C pair of Clare Mather and Di Wiseman won the first set against Cathy Cudmore and Anne Fudge before eventually losing 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Mather and Wiseman beat Lester and Scott 6-4, 6-2 in a high-quality match. When Fullman and Heather took the first set against Fudge and Cudmore, it looked as though the C team would secure a surprise win but the B players rallied to take the second set and the subsequent match- deciding tie-break, earning a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 success.
Meanwhile, the club held its annual 100+ tournament last Saturday. This is a mixed tournament where the combined ages of each pair must add up to, or exceed, 100 years.
Eight couples entered and the eventual winners were Binkie Heather and Martyn Holliday, who were well ahead of the field with 28 game wins out of 35. Their nearest rivals, Carol Stockman and Roger Pickford, finished with 23.
