A Wells carnival club has had to pull out of this year's carnival circuit after bad weather hit fundraising.

Cobra Carnival Club will not be able to celebrate their 20th birthday this year due to a lack of funds.

Although used to parading during all sorts of weather the wet summer has put a dampener on this year's event.

Chairman of Cobra, Vince Graham, explained: "We have a lot of inflatables which we rent out but this year every fete has been rained off. We've lost Glastonbury Festival this year too."

Vince has been a stalwart of Wells Carnival for 30 years and despite this year's setback is already making plans for next year's showpiece.

"It's our 21st next year so we'll come back with a hundred foot cart."

The club started life in 1992 courtesy of a group of local people including Vince, Charlie Stevens, Kay Stevens, Mark Rowe and Craig Stevens.

Based at the Tramways Club in Wells, Cobra might be missing out on the fun this year but they will still be involved all they can.

Vince said: "We'll still help out with other committees if they need a hand on the night."

Despite his current optimism Vince is concerned that enthusiasm for the carnival is not as great as it once was.

He said: "You can't get as many fundraisers this year, though I don't know what the reason is. I think there's no new blood.

"You go and talk to other clubs and it's always the same people doing the fundraising."
