Wells Tennis Club reacts to plans to move them to Haybridge
WHILE the focus of the proposed move to Haybridge has generally been on the football and rugby clubs, they are not the only clubs with decisions to make.
Wells Tennis Club is also based at the Athletic Ground and would have to relocate along with the others if the land was sold.
The tennis club held a meeting with Mendip District Council to hear the plans and will be taking a decision shortly.
Dan Cooke, speaking on behalf of the club, said: "As the second biggest tennis club in the county, with a vibrant programme of league and social tennis and high quality coaching programmes, we aim to provide the best playing facilities and club environment for our members.
"The club has a clear strategy to help deliver improved facilities over the coming years.
"Initial reaction is positive and we'll continue to listen to our members and to the council and their developer partners as more details begin to appear.
"While the idea of new facilities could be an exciting opportunity and is appealing to some, we also need to consider the effects on the community of moving the sports club wholesale out of the city to make way for housing. New housing needs open space and easy access to sports facilities too."
