Wells Golf Club fourball better-ball champions confirmed despite scorecard error
More than 200 competitors took part in the Wells Golf Club fourball better-ball Open on Saturday.
It produced a dramatic conclusion when winners Jill Coglan and Jackie Clark feared they might suffer a late disqualification.
However, they had accidentally signed for a six when they had shot a five and the rules only require disqualification when you sign for a lower score.
That left Coglan and Clark confirmed as champions by two points from Nigel Goodwin and Mike Cundhill.
The event was sponsored by Higos Insurance.
Wells hosted another big event on Sunday as more than 240 competitors gathered for Bristol & District League finals day.
The winning teams came from Henbury and Farrington, and the event organiser praised the way the course had been presented, along with the catering from S&T Hospitality.
Seniors from Wells took part in the Abbey Trophy, an end-of-season event for players who have done well in monthly medals.
Mike Magrath shot an impressive 79 (nett 63) to win the trophy by four shots and earn a handicap reduction in the process.
Steve Clark was sceond on 78 (nett 67), with Ron Davey third on 89 (nett 69).
Wells professional Adrian Bishop said: "Mike's success highlights how the right coaching will have a positive effect on your performance and ultimately help you enjoy your game more."
Wells seniors travelled to Clevedon with a 16-man team for an exciting contest.
Clevedon are unbeaten at home for two years but Wells held their nerve to triumph 5-3.
