Wells councillors have voted to spend £2,806 on new chairs for the council chamber.

This follows the collapse of three chairs in the last month.

Chairman of the finance and general purposes committee, Tony Robbins, told councillors: "This has come before us as the chairs you are sitting on are in an imminent state of collapse and we have to allow for the fact that the general public use this room as well."

The new chairs will match the tables and carpets of the council chamber better than the current ones, which were move in there following the closure of the room previously used as a court room.

There will be 16 chairs for councillor and slightly more for members of the public.

When looking at the cost of the new chairs committee member Councillor Gordon Wilson said: "You're not going to get that number of chairs for any less than that."

Mr Robins agrees: "When I looked online the lowest price I could see was around £4,000."
