A weakened Wells City side ended a run of eight straight Toolstation Premier Division defeats with a battling draw at home to Gillingham Town.

The visitors created the majority of the chances at the Athletic Ground but Ray Johnston's side stuck to their task well and were rewarded with a hard-earned point.

Ben Thompson and Lee Gale both went close for the visitors in the opening ten minutes before the Blues took the lead with their first attack after 12 minutes.

There appeared to be little danger from a throw-in but the ball fell kindly to Joe Morgan, who blasted a shot into the roof of the net from close range.

The visitors began to apply more pressure and deservedly got themselves back on level terms with a penalty ten minutes before the break.

Thompson weaved past three defenders in the Wells penalty area but the fourth – Brad Allen – hauled him to the floor. Gale stepped up to net the equaliser from the spot.

Gillingham could have added a second just before half-time but the unmarked Gale sent his volley high and wide from just ten yards out.

The visitors started the second half brightly and Nick Thompson wasted a good chance to put his side ahead.

Wells' attacking threat was non-existent after the break and it was a case of backs-against-the-wall for an overworked defence, who continued to frustrate Gillingham in their search for a winner.

The closest the visitors came to stealing all three points came when Nick Thompson's free-kick was deflected over the crossbar but Wells held on to earn a share of the spoils.
