Wells City FC chairman: We don't want to move but site is too small
FOLLOWING Monday’s meeting at the Athletic Ground the chairman of Wells City Football Club, Steve Loxton, spoke to the Journal.
He said: “We don’t want to move. In an ideal world we would like to develop what we’ve got – but the land isn’t big enough.
“We’ve outgrown this facility and we need to look at development.
“We need something that will better provide football facilities for the youth of Wells.
“We’ve got youth teams playing as far away as Glastonbury, it’s so disjointed.
“As it is now you play your game wherever and then you go home.
“With everyone in one place the club would become more of a community.
“We’re not under any obligations at the moment. We’ve not been put under any pressure from Mendip. We can be a part of this and develop the new site to our own requirements.
“It costs a lot of money to run a sports club these days. We’re dependent on sponsorship and grants and an unknown future could damage these.
“We’ve got to decide, with the other sports clubs, that we want to be part of the feasibility study.
“It’s not just down to me. Each of the clubs will get an equal vote.”
