VOLUNTEERS which included children from Sidcot School collected more than 8kg (17lbs) of rubbish from Sand Bay in Weston-super-Mare.

The 43 volunteers were helping the Marine Conservation Society conduct its annual survey about rubbish found on the nation's beaches.

The Beachwatch Big Weekend is part of the International Coastal Cleanup which takes place in 80 countries and the data helps MCS shape its beach litter campaigns and keep it on the Government's agenda.

Rubbish collected at Sand Bay included mainly plastics: polystyrene and cotton buds. The MCS says litter is unsightly and is dangerous to wildlife which gets caught up in it.
