Shepton Mallet could end up with its own museum after all.

But it could be one that is visited 'virtually', rather than a bricks-and-mortar premises.

The Shepton Mallet Museum Society held a public meeting on Monday evening to gauge whether there was enough interest in the town to continue.

The museum society has largely been inactive since the closing of the last museum in the town centre in 2001.

In calling the meeting, spokesman Chris Inchley had warned they would consider mothballing the society, if more people didn't come forward to express an interest in celebrating the town's heritage.

But after the meeting Mr Inchley said there was renewed hope the town's history could be marked after all.

"The meeting was really positive, Shepton has a great deal of history and there are many ways to exhibit it, it is really impressive the interest of people who want to exhibit Shepton's history," he said.

"The meeting was well attended by Shepton residents, there was a clear desire for those present for the town to exhibit its history.

"The meeting discussed various ways of sharing the town's history, with a virtual museum on the internet discussed as well as more tradition methods of exhibition.

"The museum society will explore options for the future in the coming months."
