A BLANKET 20mph speed limit could be introduced in Pill and Easton-in-Gordano following increasing concerns about motorists driving too fast through the villages.

Councillor Don Davies has asked North Somerset Council to conduct a feasibility study into the possibility of reducing the speed limit throughout the area to 20mph following complaints from residents.

Parts of the village – including Rectory Road and Pill Road outside St Katherine's School – already have 20mph limits.

There are also plans to introduce traffic calming, along with a 20mph limit, outside Crockerne Primary School in Westward Drive following an accident in October last year when a pupil collided with a car.

Local police regularly carry out speed checks in the village in an attempt to crack down on motorists flouting the current 30mph limit.

Residents have also supported calls for a blanket 20mph limit in the villages and the parish council has backed moves for a feasibility study to be carried out.

Mr Davies said: "The general feeling among residents is that a blanket 20mph limit covering the whole area would be the best approach.

"Speeding in the villages is a real concern and often I see people driving way to fast on roads where there are parked cars.

"The police have been carrying out regular speed checks and have been training residents up to use the speed gun.

"We conducted a survey in the area and 90 per cent of the people we spoke to were in favour of a 20mph limit.

"I have written to the executive member for transport, Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, asking him to consider the introduction of a 20mph limit and am planning to meet with officers."

It is hoped that any new limit will run from St Georges Hill to the junction of Pill Road with the A369.

Mr Ap Rees said: "I have asked officers to talk to Councillor Davies about the options and the feasibility of a 20mph limit.

"The police would have to be consulted and it is not just a case of sticking a few new speed signs up. Any agreement for a 20mph limit would have to be on the basis that it would be funded by the parish council."
