The alarm was raised at around 1.30pm when smoke was seen coming from the thatch.

Eight fire engines, a water carrier, and a foam carrier were sent to the property, where it was discovered that half the thatch roof was on fire. A further four pumps were then sent to help.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed the blaze was brought under control shortly before 6.30pm last night.

The spokesman said the owners had managed to get out safely, and that the fire was confined to the thatched roof of the property.

The fire and emergency support service vehicle from the Red Cross was also in attendance.
