Video: Fire crews spend hours fighting Donyatt thatched roof blaze
Crews from across Somerset and Dorset fought a huge fire which broke out in the thatched roof of a house in Donyatt near Ilminster yesterday afternoon.
Firefighters from Ilminster, Martock, Yeovil, Taunton, Crewkerne, Sherborne and Beaminster, Wellington, Street and Chard spent more than five hours battling to bring the blaze under control.
The alarm was raised at around 1.30pm when smoke was seen coming from the thatch.
Eight fire engines, a water carrier, and a foam carrier were sent to the property, where it was discovered that half the thatch roof was on fire. A further four pumps were then sent to help.
