Video: Tidal wave of flood water wipes out A361 road in Somerset

A tidal wave of flood water left a main road in Somerset under several feet of water this morning.

The A361 road between Taunton and Street was impassable near the village of East Lyng as a torrent of water swept over the road after surging down the side of a hill.

Stunned motorists stopped and watched the road become completely submerged by the rapids, caused as nearby floodwater was pumped away.

Fences and farmyard gates were almost entirely engulfed by the torrent of flood water, which flowed across the road and into a field opposite.

It was just one of several stretches of the A361 that has been left impassable by the floods that have crippled Somerset in the past five days.

The road has been closed to all traffic while the floodwater is pumped away.
