A police spokesman said: "We use the bodycams to help us fight crime in hot-spot areas by enabling our officers to gather evidence that can be used in court.

"We also use them to help cut the number of assaults against police officers by getting them to wear them at times when they are more likely to be attacked.

"The bodycams cost just £500 per unit and have already helped us to gain convictions against numerous criminals in court.

"Offenders are far more likely to plead guilty if they know that they have been captured on CCTV, saving the time and expense of taking cases to court."
