The extent of the damage is not yet known but shop owner Mr Simeone doesn’t know whether or not the shop will be ready for Wells Carnival night.
He said: “This could not have come at a worse time.
“Carnival is one of the busiest times of year for us and I don’t know if we’ll be open again in time.
“It’s a shock to the system. Until I can speak to the people who make our equipment I honestly don’t know how long it will take to get fixed.”
Maureen Leigh, who was serving at the time, said: "It just came out of nowhere. We could not see the fire but there was lots of smoke. Someone came in and said 'your chimney is on fire'.
"I don't normally work today I expecting a few orders but not this."
Firefighters from Wells, Glastonbury and Shepton mallet were on the scene and Tucker Street was closed to traffic.
The fire started in a chip pan.
