SALTFORD 0 NAILSEA UNITED 3

NAILSEA travelled to Division 1 outfit Saltford in the quarter-finals of the League Cup to maintain their challenge for silverware this season.

United could have gone into the lead after 13 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for a push by a Saltford defender but Matt Long's penalty was well saved.

Play remained even, with the only chances being a Saltford shot into the side-netting and a Long free-kick which Jim Lee fired over.

With five minutes to half-time, a push on Russ Driver gave Nailsea another penalty, this time the kick was taken by James Lee, who beat the keeper with a strong shot into the roof of the net.

On 50 minutes a long throw by James Taylor was headed towards goal by James Lee and into the net, only for the linesman to flag for offside.

This galvanised Nailsea to raise their game and it was no surprise when, on 70 minutes, James Lee broke free and coolly lobbed the Saltford keeper to make it 2-0.

Saltford tried to get back into the game and Nailsea had keeper Luke Davies to thank for a smart save to keep their two-goal lead intact.

The away side introduced young Ben Thorne to replace Kevin Cosham. As Saltford pressed forward they were left exposed at the back and duly paid the price when a revitalised James Lee was again sent through only to be hauled down by a desperate Saltford defender.

Lee stepped up for the resultant penalty and beat the keeper for his hat-trick.

Substitute Jon Clayton nearly added to the Nailsea total but his header was well-saved by the home keeper.

KEYNSHAM TOWN RES 1 NAILSEA UTD RES 2

UNITED Reserves staged an excellent second-half fightback to record their second consecutive victory.

Keynsham started the brighter and spent much of the opening half-hour camped inside the Nailsea half.

Chances were fairly limited but eventually the pressure told when a Keynsham striker hit the roof of the net with a smart shot on the turn.

Nailsea had a few bright moments as Bannerman and Cogan got behind the home defence, only for the linesman's flag to bring them to a halt.

Chris Gale ran through to equalise soon after the restart.

United were now rejuvenated and took the lead when a long looping cross from Summerell put the home keeper in trouble and he spilled the ball straight to Cogan to nudge home from close range.

Nailsea had to endure a few scares as they tried to seal victory, with Benson's goal under serious assault as the ball hit the post only to rebound into his grateful arms.

Keynsham thought they had their equaliser when the ball hit the bar and bounced towards the goalline, but the referee adjudged it had not crossed the line.
