PROPER job! It's coming up to midnight and the crowds are beginning to descend on Trinity: reggae time! The Twinkle Brothers may have been performing for nigh on 50 years but it's certain they'll be up and running whenever they appear. The dancefloor is set up in fine style between two imposing pyramids of plywood artistry, Channel One's speaker cabinets making a crisp and thunderous sound for the thickening crowd of dancers between them. Some fine selections later and then Bristol singer Joshua Moses does a short 'playback' set, conscious lyrics and whirling locks testament to the virtues of throwing away the comb in the name of Rastafari.

He's well received but knows he must acknowledge the legacy of what's to come, which he does with genuine enthusiasm, leaving the Channel One brothers to fill the sound once more, Mikey Dread's exhortations and Ras Kayleb's selections notching things up as the room fills.

And then it's time for the main attraction and on come the Twinkle Brothers with a chirpy 'Good morning Bristol!' from Royston Grant before younger brother Norman leaps into It's Only Rasta and things fall sweetly into place. This is a perfect sound – two guitars (including Royston's) and keyboards over a tightly wrought drum and bass combination. Norman's front-man skills are assured by his five decades (they even reprise their first hit, 1964's Somebody Please Help Me .

It's the rockers that rule, however, with the hypnotic monotone bass-line of Babylon Is A Trap.

Their energy is relentless, an hour and a half in the small hours that never slackens or shows a drop of sweat, and though they inevitably eventually hand things over to Channel One you feel they could have gone on Twinkling till the sun comes up.
