Colin the culvert swimming swan is safe in the arms of rescuer Martin Kendal after his quarter mile paddle under Clevedon town centre
The pot-holing swan was only spotted after he became trapped by a grille at an outlet to the stream.
Colin’s epic journey underneath Clevedon town centre began when he entered the underground section of the Land Yeo River, in North Somerset.

He swam more than a quarter of a mile underground – below most of the town centre – before his epic journey ended when he became trapped at the river’s outlet.
Sharp-eyed resident Stewart Edwards caught sight of the swan while he was stuck behind the grille – which was installed to prevent debris floating down the river.
He said: “I was on my way to the bank when I saw the young swan trapped behind the grille and called Secret World Wildlife Rescue.”
After a night trapped behind the grille, Colin was finally rescued by intrepid wildlife response driver Martin Kendal.
A heavy metal grating on top of the grille was removed so Martin could climb down a ladder and rescue the swan.
Colin was popped into a protective swan wrap and taken back down the M5 to Secret World’s base near Highbridge, Somerset.
Secret World founder Pauline Kidner said the young swan was recovering well from his ordeal and would soon be released to join other young males at their favourite gathering spot on the Somerset Levels.
