DRIVERS heading along the A30 at Yeovil were not sure whether this election day sign was a portent of things to come.

Indeed, some thought the fluorescent red notice saying 'GIG, Tumbleweed, Labour Club, Friday', on the roundabout by Yeovil District Hospital might be a tongue in cheek jibe at Labour's prospects, with only tumbleweed likely to be blowing through the club at Vincent Place in the aftermath of the election.

It was no joke and the band Tumbleweed were playing at the club on Friday night, along with King Tuts Revenge, Undertryyke and The Switch in an event organised by the Yeovil and District Trades Union Council.

Between each band's set were short speeches and films.

Keith Hatch of the South West TUC said: "This event was aimed at bringing people together, both young and old, to show them that trade unions and the local TUC are as relevant today as ever."

The result for Labour was not the wipe-out that some had predicted with Gordon Brown still Prime Minister, albeit as an interim measure while power brokers in the three main parties decided which coalition would form a government.

But in Yeovil, Labour's Lee Skevington did not receive enough votes to save his deposit.
