Trials round-up: Jason Hamblin wins Terry Phillips Cup
Following the warmer conditions, the North Somerset club was able to run the Terry Phillips Cup timed and observation trial at Charterhouse-on-Mendip on Sunday.
But with all the snow gone, 55 starters in the hour-long battle against the clock and the terrain at Ubley Drove had to contend with thick glue-like mud.
Winner Jason Hamblin and runner-up Tom Smith both managed to complete 11 laps but Wessex Centre champion Simon Prideaux missed out on the premier award by finishing a lap down. Apart from enduro class winner Charlie Frost, the remainder of the field completed nine or less.
Three of the half dozen sections were responsible for the high loss of marks on observation. A u-turn at the foot of a descent in the second had to be treated with respect. A climb between trees in the fifth ordered little wheel grip with many having to struggle to reach the summit and a climb over mud, rocks and roots in the sixth was just as difficult.

The Somerton club had to switch their experts barred trial the previous day from Binegar Quarry on the Mendips, owing to melting snow, ice and flooding to Keinton Quarry near Charlton Mackrell, Ilchester.
This was decided over four laps of ten sections featuring four separate routes. Novice Barry Male managed to retain a clean sheet on the main route and David Gollicker was best on the twin shock route with the loss of three marks.
Prior to the event, the organisers handed over a cheque for £600 plus to the Somerset Air Ambulance fund, which was raised at an event in 2012.
