Jason Hamblin was a clear winner of the trials class in the BSSA’s Alan Brown Trophy Series timed and observation event at Backwell Hill near Lulsgate on Sunday.

He was second fastest to complete the hour-long event behind Tom Smith and he lost just three marks on observation in the last of six sections, which were encountered on each of ten laps in Filers Wood. In his wake the battle for second place ended with Ben Sinclair finishing in front of his father Stuart, albeit by a single mark.

Staged at a new venue at Parklands Farm, 42 took part in a four-lap, ten-section event which was not unduly difficult. Brain lost only single marks in the second and eighth sections and he finished five marks up on Lee Hassall with British ladies champion Becky Cook in third place.

Clubman expert class winner Rob Scott lost all his marks in one section and over 40 years class leader Nigel Tomkins incurred single mark debits in five sections.

National star Ricky Wiggins was a clear winner of the Yeo Vale Club’s first trial of 2013 at East Chinnock, where an entry of 80-plus faced four laps of ten sections at Allicombe Green Lane. The first four sections were reasonably easy, but the last six all featured long muddy climbs which took a high toll of marks. Grant Laming was credited with second place but in fact youth expert class winner Tom Hooper, from Porlock in West Somerset, dropped two fewer marks competing on the main route.
