Fourteen-time Wessex Centre trials champion Colin Crease returned to winning form with a 13-mark win over Kurt Brain in the North Somerset Club’s President’s Cup event at Chelwood on Sunday.

The 60 riders faced three laps of a dozen sections, which were badly affected by heavy overnight rain.

No-one made unpenalised attempts in the third section, where a descent into soft and rutted mud was followed by a steepish climb, and it was a similar story in the ensuing section where a climb over a steep and slippery bank and tree roots claimed marks from the entire field. The two sections cost Crease 13 marks, Brain 20 and Ben Skinner 22.

Melksham’s Rob Scott came out on top in the clubman expert class after a battle with Taunton’s Henry Pym and the lead changed hands on several occasions before Scott went ahead on the final lap.

Swindon teenager Ben Wilmore outshone his rivals in the clubman class and he lost all his marks in the third, fourth and tenth sections.

His father Martyn was involved in a three-way tussle with Nigel Tomkins and David Clothier in the over 50 years of age class, which Tomkins won in the latter stages.

Eight crews took part in the sidecar event, which was staged over a single lap of 26 sections half-a-mile away at Fry’s Bottom.

Overall winners were Darryl Dale and Hannah Etherington, from Guildford, Surrey, closely followed by their near neighbours Rupert and Chris Kimber.

Despite further heavy rain in West Somerset, the Exmoor Club ran their long-distance Neil Westcott Trial, but results are delayed following the loss of a recording card.

Totnes all-rounder Nick Life went home £150 richer after winning the main class and the Super Final in the Pendennis Club’s Enduro at the United Downs raceway, near Redruth. He won both half-hour legs in the expert event from Ian Martin and he took the Super Final event, which was cut to three laps.
