MP defends the badger cull
The new Agriculture Minister David Heath, who is also Somerton and Frome MP has described proposed alternatives to a selective badger cull as "wishful thinking".
Mr Heath, writing in the Somerset Standard said: "Bovine tuberculosis is a devastating disease, resulting in the slaughter of about 25,000 cattle each year, and the devastation of farmers' lives. Nobody wants to kill badgers.
"But there isn't a single country which has managed to turn the tide on TB without addressing the disease in wildlife.
"The easy cry is to use vaccination, and we're spending £15.5 million on vaccine research over the next four years.
"But the vaccine we currently have for badgers requires them to be trapped and injected every year; impracticable and vastly expensive."
