Town to review its free parking
FREE parking in Wincanton is being reviewed by the town council.
Town councillor Colin Winder said the loss of free parking could spell disaster for the town.
But a deal to safeguard free parking in three car parks – Memorial Hall, Churchfields and Carrington Way – has cost Wincanton Town Council £24,000 a year since 2011.
A three-year pact with the sites' owner South Somerset District Council to secure free parking is set to end next year.
Now a committee of town councillors set up to oversee the car parks is to look for other options.
Mr Winder said a minority of people were misusing the system which is intended to provide free parking to shoppers, supporting trade in the town.
