Flood alerts have been issued across Somerset by the Environment Agency following heavy downpours overnight.

There is also one flood warning in place in the county, indicating flooding is expected and immediate action required, on the River Isle from Chard Reservoir to Hambridge.

Up to an inch-and-a-half fell in some places as a band of rain swept across the South West yesterday.

As of 11.50am today there were 26 flood alerts in force in the region, including five in Somerset.

There are fears of further flooding with the prospect of more downpours after the weekend.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "We are warning communities across South West England to be vigilant and alert for flooding as heavy rain is set to return into Monday."

The Met Office has removed a "yellow" severe weather warning for the South West for Sunday but has extended it to cover the whole of Monday.

It says 10-20mm of rain is expected, 30mm in some isolated areas, and that there is a risk of localised flooding.
