Yeovil 5 Glastonbury 1

Until recently, Glastonbury competed in Division 1 of the Somerset League as one of five leading teams, all of whom had the potential to be champions.

  1. Castle Cary RFC under-16 team captain CHARLES PROUD, JEAN-LIN PELATAN from CROWN PET FOODS and MARCUS BARGERY from ALL STYLE FENCING AND GATES. JAMES ATKINS coach, CHRIS WATTS club president, PAUL LESTER - HINCHCLIFFE chairman, CASTLE RUIN and CROWN PET FOODS employee GARETH SANDERSON.

However, the current situation has become reminiscent of football's Premier League, with the two largest clubs, Taunton and Yeovil, moving to a level significantly ahead of the rest.

So when the Thorns travelled to Yeovil last week, while a victory was not impossible, their strongest group of players was required and all individuals needed to be at the top of their game.

Unfortunately, although the first of these criteria was broadly fulfilled, the second was not. Neville Senior, who in the past two years has been a Division 1 stalwart for Glastonbury, chose the evening to make a rare opening error, which quickly proved fatal.

Millfield School youngster Nikita Ayvazan also went down to only his second defeat in the three seasons he has been playing for the club.

Although the match was already lost, the last two games to finish provided a tiny measure of compensation for the Thorns. Paul Moody held a clear advantage going into the endgame and only clever defence by his opponent resulted in an agreed draw.

Finally, Tristan West, playing in his first Division 1 encounter, maintained his excellent recent form having much the better of a draw against a highly-rated player.
