Rugby players were seen making hasty calls on borrowed mobile phones post-match in Winscombe after someone stole credit cards from the changing room.

Between 2.30pm and 6pm on Saturday, February 16, someone snuck into the changing room at Winscombe Recreation Ground and helped themselves to cash, mobile phones and credit cards.

As soon as the theft was discovered after the Winscombe 2nd team’s match against Old Culverhaysians of Bath, players quickly cancelled cards with their banks before they could be used and arranged lifts where car keys had been stolen.

There was good news for the Winscombe 2nd home team though, they beat the visitors 17-5 in the Somerset 2 North league match.

Fortunately, none of Winscombe FC were victims during their own match, apart from the match referee whose locker was raided.

The changing rooms are secured with keypads and the codes were quickly changed soon after the crime. The changing rooms were burgled a few years ago but on that occasion the suspect was caught.

Winscombe cricket, football, hockey and rugby clubs all use the clubhouse at Winscombe War Memorial Ground.

The police are investigating the current theft and are appealing for anyone who has information about the incident to contact them on 101.

Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. You do not have to give your name if you do not want to.
