DRAYTON'S unofficial "mayor" has been honoured for his services to the village.

Eddie Hancock has been chairman of the Village Hall Management Committee, a charitable trust, for more than 20 years.

His work has been recognised with a Somerset County Council Chairman's Award.

Grant Evans, vice chairman of Drayton Parish Council, said: "Eddie Hancock is an outstanding personality, totally dedicated to our village, helping all when asked and known affectionately among his peers as The Mayor of Drayton, an accolade he richly deserves."

He was presented with his award by Curry Rivel county councillor Derek Nelson in front of a group of Drayton residents after he was too ill to join other recipients attending a recent ceremony in Taunton.

Mr Evans said: "Eddie has been at the centre of an enthusiastic group of trustees dedicated to the continuous task of refurbishing and upgrading the old school house which became our village hall in 1968. Our hall is a precious asset used by all village groups and a monthly farmers' market. It is the focal point of the community since losing our post office and village shop.

"Eddie's dedication and constant attention has made our hall what it is today."

Mr Hancock was a parish councillor for 12 years before retiring in 2011.

He is also a founding member and treasurer of the Drayton Annual Street Fair Committee.
