Motorists from Wells are being asked to come forward if they have had problems after filling up in Shepton Mallet.

A couple from Doulting, near Shepton Mallet, sent out the plea after their own car was filled with petrol, instead of diesel.

Adam Underwood spoke out after he ended up with a repair bill of hundreds of pounds, when his Land Rover Freelander ground to a halt.

He said he was left mystified when his garage told him that instead of diesel in the tank there was more than 50 litres of petrol. Mr Underwood claims to have a receipt which proves they filled up from the diesel pump at the Shepton Mallet Tesco filling station.

However Tesco denies any responsibility and pointed out there have been no other similar claims for the same time, Boxing Day.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "Following Mr Underwood's complaint we carried out a thorough investigation. Our fuel and tanks are checked on a daily basis and we have found no evidence of petrol contamination in our diesel. We received no other complaints from customers in December and January."

With vouchers being given out from the Wells Tesco store for the Shepton filling station, the Underwoods are appealing for any motorists from the city who have been affected to come forward.
