The way we treat animals has always been a significant concern for North East Somerset people. Since first being elected in 1997, rarely a week has passed without at least a handful of constituent letters in my postbag about animal-related issues.

So it's no surprise that new Conservative pledges to reverse Labour's fox hunting ban are triggering such strong feelings.

Many readers will recall how, soon after first becoming the area's MP, I ran a major constituent survey about hunting to ensure my vote in parliament reflected the views of people I'm proud to represent.

The survey findings showed my constituents overwhelmingly wanted hunting banned, wherever they live in rural villages or our main towns.

So I worked long and hard with many others to get the cruelty of fox hunting banned. It was never going to be easy. You may recall TV and newspaper pictures of physical attacks on me by pro-hunt mobs.

Now with fox hunting firmly back on the agenda, I'm again seeking local people's views to ensure I'm still closely in touch. Please let me know what you think by sending an email to dan@dannorris.org.uk or by writing to Dan Norris MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA.

“I think hunting is disgusting, if it wasn't for us we wouldn't need to hunt poor defenceless animals in the first place. Why hunt and hate an animal that kills for survival while we kill it for pleasure. As for the hunting dogs - isn't part of growing up taking responsibility for your actions? I'm sure plenty of animal lovers would be willing to take the dogs in...

Anyone who thinks that the economic crisis is more important than sparing the life of another living creature need to rethink their morals and start being compassionate. WE control our lives, WE choose what happens in this country. Stop expecting others to sort out the problem for you and then complain about the outcome. The government need us, without us there wouldn't be a government.

Live by your head but don't forget to have a heart. Imagine if it was you getting ripped apart...”

“J Hawkes ¿ Your response so typifies the whole debate on hunting and why we are at odds with one another. I am against animal cruelty that¿s why I support hunting, having watched six High ranking officials of the League against cruel sports leave the organization expressing the view the only likely outcome of a ban is more suffering, why do think I am so wrong?

Hunting is ineffective? That is a very narrow minded view in my opinion, the ban was for all forms of hunting with dogs (Terriers, Gaze hounds), therefore we have to take the total number killed by all forms (Logical really) and that total is roughly the same as shooting.

Blood Lust ¿ That is made up to support you opposition to hunting with hounds. The reason why I go and others like me is because we accept the fox is going to be killed but overall his lot is better off with us.”

“I think some of the people placing comments here have missed the point. This article by Dan Norris is requesting that people give their views to him on hunting - not on how the government has performed in the past. It is irrelevant to the issue raised here.

The decision whether or not the hunting ban stays or is revoked by the Tories, is extremely important to many people who, like myself, are ethical, against any 'blood sports' and any cruelty to animals.

However you dress it up, hunting is ineffective in controlling foxes, inhumane to the animals and the only possible reason it is undertaken is to satisfy the blood lust of people who want to partake in this outdated and unethical 'tradition'.

We should follow Scotland's decision and keep the ban on hunting.”

“Dan, you are a man people can trust - unlike Cameron and his drones. Take no notice of the scum hunt supporters writing against you.
A man with compassion is a man we can trust to care about 'us'.
I know many Nigel Saunder types and unfeeling Julia Mc Keiver types, oh and let's not leave out all those other hunt supporters, all dressed up to look like they care about the downtrodden people in this country, when all they really care about is getting back their SICK killing for fun.
I always knew as soon as the evil hunts smelt blood they would all come crawling out of the woodwork.
Oh and before I finish, a message for Craggs - the fact you accuse kind people of being bunny huggers proves you haven't evolved yet! KIndness is a human trait which all those criticising Dan Norris clearly don't have.
Most are with you Dan - let the pro-hunt scum go to hell where they belong!!!!”

The selling off of the gold MP s expenses and Mr Browns temper.. Dan the voters aren't stupid we have wonderful memories”

“It says so much about people when the highlight of the day is to seek out, chase to utter exhaustion and to watch a defenceless animal torn to pieces by hounds that are taught to kill. It is the most shocking, appalling thing to witness and is totally unnecessary. If these awful people need a law to stop this dreadful activity then so be it. The way we treat animals is an indicator of our humanity and our love and understanding and appreciation of all animals. Do what ever you can please to enforce this law so these animals can live peacefully. With out it Cameron and his cronies will show their true colours. It's blood red and not blue. Inspite of Cameron's effort to convey a careing persona he can't wait to get out there and kill!”

“The comments from the pro-hunt fraternity directing their venom against Dan Norris and those of us who are against hunting, clearly displays that they would have been better served having spent more time in the classroom rather than pursuing defenceless wild animals with dogs and guns.

Hunting is outdated, unnecessary, cruel and should remain banned and enforced with tougher penalties for law breakers.

However you look at it, the statistics clearly show that most people are against hunting.”
