Dubbed "The High Street', the six-part series is due to be screened in the Autumn.

Mendip District Council worked closely with other councils, organisations and businesses to ensure the filming was brought to the town.

Wall to Wall's line producer Jane Atkinson said she and her team were thrilled by the welcome and support they have had from the town. As well as supporting local hostelries and food outlets during their stay they have also been using local businesses for props and materials.

Jane said: "We have used Black Cat Bindery in Castle Cary for the shopkeepers' manuals, and Andy at AS print for our graphics. Simon Dyke, the organic pig breeder from Cranmore got us the pig in the butchers, and Roger Longman at Bagborough Farm, Shepton Mallet provided the smaller cheeses in the shops.

"Chats and Peppers keep us going with bacon butties and lunches for the teams and the Shrubbery is trying it's hand at period meals for the families. Steve's Fish Bar feeds the art department on more days than not.

"The art department have used a number of local tradesmen and companies ranging from Dragon Forge to set up the forge, and building supplies from Right Price, Bradfords, and Snows to name a few. Local gardeners Mike Chitty and Clive Gibbon constructed and planted our Victorian and Edwardian gardens plus the WW2 vegetable plot. And we find that Dredge and Male will always have that little last item that we desperately need in stock."

Jane said: "We did hear someone passing through the square say to his friend 'I don't know why, but I get a feeling I've just stepped back in time' – which did amuse us!"

Tonight at 6.30pm a special public meeting is being held in the Mendip Council Offices in Shepton Mallet to discuss how to turn the TV filming and transformation of the shops into something positive for the town for the future. The meeting has been organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Regeneration Group Shepton 21.
