Police confirmed an allegation of assault had been made and they are investigating.
No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Bosses at Nailsea School confirmed a teacher had been suspended following an incident and that it was conducting its own inquiry.
Nailsea School deputy headteacher Gill Kelly said: "An investigation is underway to look into an allegation made by a student.
"At the moment we are still conducting that investigation and we do not have all the evidence we need to come to any conclusion.
"We need to be sympathetic to both parties and let the investigation take its course.
"Nailsea School takes allegations of this kind very seriously.
"We will make sure that whatever the outcome, the school will deal with the matter appropriately."
Nailsea School, which employs 80 teachers, re-opened last September following a £30 million rebuild.
The school, which took 16 months to build and can cater for up to 1,500 students, was funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) as part of the Government's Building Schools for the Future programme.
Nailsea School, led by headteacher David New, is a technology and media arts college and currently has around 1,200 students on roll.
A police spokesman said: "An incident has been reported to police and we are investigating."
