Taunton Titans slipped to second from bottom in SSE National Two South after a crushing 68-15 away defeat against title-chasing Henley.

It was their 15th loss of the season and their second heavy reverse against the Hawks, who won 61-11 at Hyde Park earlier this season.

Taunton now need to win at least two if not three of their remaining seven games if they are to avoid relegation and face a crucial home game against Bournemouth, who are three points and three places above them, this coming weekend.

Player-coach Tony Yapp is still confident Taunton can avoid the drop and said: “We have games in hand on teams around us, so it is in our hands.”

He has also given the strongest hint yet that he will be “around next winter.”

The 35-year-old fly-half, who combines the role with being coach at Exeter University, said yesterday: “I’m in talks with the club and trying to put things together for next season.

“The club are still talking about the playing budget. I’m hoping it will remain at least the same.”

“The important thing is to get it right and not have to make cuts after the season starts. No-one wants that.

“It is important I know the budget and that it is sustainable.”
