Taunton Titans’ player-coach Tony Yapp admits he still needs “a couple of old heads” to strengthen his side in National Two South after Saturday's 25-15 loss to Redruth in National Two South.

Yapp’s playing budget has been reduced by 50 per cent compared to last season, which means he is limited to who he can sign. Loan deals are a likely option.

Titans played with plenty of spirit in this opener at Hyde park and led 12-10 at half time, but the Reds’ pack dominated the second half and proved to be more street-wise.

Mike Pope and Dean Taylor-Menzies scored first half tries for Titans with Yapp kicking a conversion.

Reds’ first half points came from a try by Greg Goodfellow, which was converted by Paul Thirlby who also landed a penalty. Tom Duncan scored two further tries for the Cornish side after the interval with Thirlby also kicking a penalty, while Titans’ only response was a penalty from Brett Turner.

Promoted North Petherton made a winning start in South West One (W), beating North Dorset 32-22 at home.

But they had to come back from 15-10 down at half time.

Gavin Hancock, Toby Harris, Sam Chillingworth, Aaron Gibbs and Harry Roberts scored tries for Petherton with Roberts scoring a penalty and two conversions.
