Superfast broadband in Somerset money backed
The news that superfast broadband in Somerset will be given millions of pounds of investment thanks to approval of state aid by the European Commission has been welcomed by a South West MEP.
Liberal Democrat Sir Graham Watson said: "I am delighted that the investment has finally been approved, which will be matched with further private investment.
"However I hope that Broadband Delivery UK and the European Commission will look into the reasons why this sign off took so long.
"We can now proceed to bring the vital investment that is required to rural communities and towns across the area and put in place the tools that are required to spur economic growth in the west."

Following a number of complaints by councils and MPs to Sir Graham over these delays, he met European Commissioners to express their frustrations and break the deadlock.

“EU 'investment' money is UK taxpayer eventually returning to its source and whatever the amount it will have cost circa x 3 the amount in the original monies paid to the EU by the UK.
The member States have no control over the amount and or where/when any 'investment' by the EU Commissioners takes place or even if it is given at all.
Additionally there is no EU or UK government mechanism that checks that the monies, partial or in full, are even paid. The sums paid are subject to massive delays in the EU and generally when/if paid are long after the completion of any contracts.
As the EU own auditors have failed for 18 years to agree/pass the EU accounts no-one, including the SW Liberal Democrat MEP has the remotist idea what in reality takes place.
A farce which is indefensible, apart from that undertaken by the Liberal Democrats.”
