The huge success of the new open-air Sunday market has confirmed its place firmly on the diary for 2013 in Frome.

The large town centre street market will resume around Easter with dates yet to be finalised, according to Frome Town Council.

Peter Wheelhouse, Frome Town Council's economic development and regeneration manager, said he has been overwhelmed by the positive feeling and feedback.

He said: "Putting Frome back on the map as the Somerset market town is bringing lots of people here, which is good news for local businesses and traders. We are hearing from many that these markets have made a noticeable impact on their takings this year.

"Attracting residents and businesses to spend more locally – and encouraging others here to do the same – is something the council is keen to promote.

"These markets, alongside the other great events and attractions Frome has to offer, help to make our town a more recognised destination in the south-west."

Launched in July this year, the Super Market started as a three-month experiment, which received instant support, attracting 150 stalls and thousands of visitors.

The Christmas event at the beginning of December, which featured as part of the Frome Festive Weekend, has been heralded the most successful to date.

Mendip district councillor Philip Ham, who works alongside Mendip's markets manager Stuart Beeton to coordinate these events, is enthusiastic about their impact on the local community and economy.

"One of the council's main priorities is to support business development and growth across the Mendip area and the Frome Super Market is the perfect example of how this can be done.

"The Super Markets were launched to support Frome's local businesses, traders and the town centre and I'm delighted that they have been such a success."

The Frome Super Market evolved from the popular Artisan Market, which was started on Catherine Hill.
