A sports festival in Cheddar has received a £2,000 injection.

The first Cheddar Youth Sports Festival aims to showcase the sporting opportunities available in the Cheddar Valley area for individuals aged 18 and under.

Local sports clubs will be able to give out information, talk to visitors, put on demonstrations and invite visitors to have a go at activities on the day.

The festival will be held on Sharpham Road Playing Fields on Sunday, July 12. Bristol Water is allowing the nearby reservoir to be used for sailing and fishing, and clubs with the Kings of Wessex Leisure Centre are also getting involved and offering a marquee as insurance against another wet summer.

The festival is delighted with the cash Wallis Simpson from a Grassroots Grant from Somerset Community Foundation.

Festival co-ordinator Peter Colton said: "Thanks to the Grassroots Grant and funding support from sponsors Bristol Water and Cheddar Parish Council, entry and parking will be free to visitors and there will be no charge for having a go at any of the clubs' activities on the day.

"There has been strong interest from a wide variety of local sports clubs, including archery, BMX, judo, football, rifle shooting, rugby, swimming, tennis and triathlon.

"The festival is expected to attract a large number of visitors from right across the local community and it is anticipated that one or more celebrity sports people will also be there to raise the profile of the event."

Clubs wishing to take part must offer junior membership to individuals who are 18 and under.

They are required to complete an official booking form available from Mr Colton on 01934 742703 or www.cheddaryouthsports.co.uk.
