Year 11 pupils at Wells Cathedral School have achieved very good results in their GCSE examinations this summer.

Most impressive were the number of top grades achieved, with more than 54 per cent of entries awarded A* or A grades, and more than a third of students achieving eight or more A* and A grades.

No fewer than 14 pupils were awarded all As and A*s, including Bethany Farr, Jasmine Franck, Megan Henson, Madeleine Herbert, Bethany Johnson, Victor Lim, Dylan Maxwell, Lee Jae Phang, Edward Rowe, Dennis Saw, Leidy Sinclair, Francesca Smith, Joel Thompson and Miri Wakelin-Gilden.

Of particular mention are the seven pupils who were awarded at least seven A* grades: Miri Wakelin-Gilden, who received 11 A*s; Madeleine Herbert who achieved ten A*s; Megan Henson who achieved nine A*s; Bethany Farr and Jessie Redwood who both achieved eight A*s; and both Nicholas Jarman and Dennis Saw who achieved seven A*s, as well as a handful of A grades. More than half of all Wells entrants achieved at least six or more A* and A grades.

Among the top achievers were some of the school's musicians, including Peter Byfield, Bethany Farr, Jasmine Franck, Sophie Gallagher, Zosie Golding, Bethany Johnson, Harry Johnson, Victor Lim, Lee Jae Phang, Dennis Saw and Leidy Sinclair who all achieved seven or more A* or A grades while also concentrating on their music.

More than 80 per cent of entrants gained an A* or A grade at music, while all six of Wells' entrants for GCSE Italian gained an A*. Mathematics and English results were once again strong, with 50 per cent of entrants gaining A* and A grades in both. The school chooses to take the more rigorous International GCSE Mathematics paper, with more than a third of pupils taking the exam a year early, and all of those achieving A or A* grades. Wells also scored well in the three sciences, with 27 per cent of the entrants gaining an A* in biology, 25 per cent gaining an A* in chemistry, and 20 per cent gaining an A* in physics.

Elizabeth Cairncross, the head teacher, said: "Again, we're proud of our pupils and proud of all their supportive families and of our staff. These are good results in a competitive world, and they give people a firm foundation for whatever their next stage will be."
