Street powerlifter Lucie Spraggon claims British titles
A powerlifter from Street has been called up to the British team for this summer’s World Championships after a record-breaking performance at the national championships earlier this month.
It has been a meteoric rise for Lucie Spraggon, who only took up the sport in November after seeing her coach Mark Bentley squatting at the Train Station Gym in Glastonbury.

At her first British Drug-Free Powerlifting Association competition in January, she won the South West junior and open age group titles in the under-80kg category, setting regional records of 90.5kg in the squat and 117.5kg in the deadlift.
That earned her a place at the British Single-Lift Championships, where she won both junior titles again.

She sealed the victory with a lift of 80kg in the squat, although a later effort of 92.5kg was not counted due to a technical fault.
In the deadlift, Spraggon broke the British record to secure victory with a lift of 122.5kg.
She will now go forward to the World Championships in Belgium in June and European Championships in Ukraine in September as part of the British team.
She is hoping to improve her personal best and break the junior under-80kg world record for deadlift, which currently stands at 130kg, but says she needs to financial support to continue her progress.
“As powerlifting is a relatively new sport, with the BDFPA being founded in 1989, there is no funding for athletes,” she said.
“I would like to say a massive than you to Train Station Gym for all the training, advice and generous sponsorship donation towards costs of competing.
“I am seeking more sponsorship to help with cost of travel and essential equipment needed to succeed at world level.
“If you or a local business would like to help by donating an amount, however small or big, it would be greatly appreciated.”
