A woodburner stove brought an unlovable start to a mid-Somerset resident's Valentine's Day.

A householder at Charlton Mackrell called in emergency services shortly after 5.30am on Sunday to a chimney fire.

A fire brigade spokesman said that when the first fire engine from Somerton arrived it became clear that the roof was already well alight.

"Further fire engines from Street and Yeovil attended, one fire officer and with the Land Rover taking all available fire crew from Somerton to the incident," said the spokesman.

"Crews tackled the fire from the roof and the hearth, using two roof ladders and removing tiles to access the roof space, two sets of breathing apparatus were used along with two hose reels and two thermal imaging cameras.

"The fire involved a wood-burning stove at the property."
