Devon and Somerset fire and rescue have announced plans to cut the whole-time fire fighters at Taunton fire station by 50%. This will mean the second fire engine at Taunton will become an "On Call" fire engine. It will be crewed by retained fire fighters.

There is a real danger to public and fire fighter safety because of the time it takes retained fire fighters to mobilise and crew the fire engine and the time it takes to arrive at the scene of operations.Taunton is the county town of Somerset and is expanding rapidly the population is growing and there are plans to increase the infrastructure through capital projects , such as building another relief road through the town.Taunton fire station is unlike other stations in the service as it is surrounded by retained stations , the nearest whole-time crewed station is Bridgwater. It also sits on the M5 corridor were a 2 fire engine attendance is always required.

“Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is asking people to have their say on a range of proposals designed to meet a £5.5 million reduction in Government funding.

The consultation period has started and closes on 22 April 2013.

The proposals have been developed through extensive, in-depth research and they focus on maintaining or where possible improving public safety at a lower cost to taxpayers.

None of the proposals involve closing fire stations, removing fire engines or making staff compulsorily redundant.

The proposals include a measure to change the crewing arrangements of the second fire appliance at Taunton from wholetime to on call.”
