Stephen Spraggon landscape photos in West Mendip Hospital display
Local landscape photographer Stephen Spraggon is currently showing a selection of his work in the temporary exhibition space at West Mendip Hospital, in Glastonbury, until early December.
He first exhibited in this space in 2007, soon after the hospital opened, but his new photographs show considerable technical developments.
Stephen is a semi-professional photographer, born and bred in Somerset, passionate about landscape.
His latest exhibition, although starting with the nearby Somerset Levels, features pictures from further afield, depicting some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside.
In last year’s International Garden Photographer of the Year competition, one of Stephen’s pictures of Berrow beach gained a Highly Commended award, an achievement of which he is very proud.
He said: “To receive merit in a widely publicised photography competition is fantastic, particularly because interest in photography is at an all-time high at the moment.
“I hope it helps my pictures be seen by more people and that it perhaps introduces them to places they wouldn’t otherwise visit.”
With a background as a graphic designer, Stephen divides his time between design and photography work.
This often involves being out at unsociable hours whenever the weather and light are suitable.
The determination and patience required to depict unusual light effects is evident throughout his photographs, infused with natural highlights.
West Mendip Hospital Art Group are always interested to hear from local artists or photographers who may wish to exhibit in the central exhibition space at the hospital.
Works, limited to eight or ten large, or a maximum of 20 smaller-sized, must already be framed and will be shown at the artist’s own risk but hanging is security locked.
If interested, write to Deborah Woolven, Hospital Arts Group, Speech and Language Therapy, West Mendip Hospital, Old Wells Road, Glastonbury BA6 8JD with suggestions, including some visual examples.
Works can be for sale, with a small percentage payable to hospital funds.
Stephen’s cards are always on sale at the hospital, as well as many other local outlets. His website address is www.spraggonphotography.co. uk.
